About
Plexity presents a body of work made during Kati Vilim’s time as Artist in Residence at Express Newark. In her practice, Vilim investigates visual form as an abstract system. Working in the pictorial language of geometric abstraction, she draws on a variety of compositional strategies such as as algorithms, geometry, and structures composed of ratio and rhythm. Here, the title of the exhibition is a linguistic term, referring to whether a quantity of time or matter consists of one (uniplex) or more (multiplex) equivalent elements. Thus with, Plexity, Vilim creates a dynamic play between the grammar of language and color theory.
Vilim holds Master of Fine Arts degrees from both the University of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungary and Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey. She works across a range of media, including oil painting, printmaking, digital animation, and multimedia installation. Her work has been shown at institutions nationally and internationally, such as Flux Gallery, Budapest, Hungary; Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, Nebraska; Untitled Art Fair, Miami Beach, Florida; Gateway Project, Newark, New Jersey; Walsh Gallery, Seton Hall University, South Orange, New Jersey; and her work is found in numerous private collections.
The Artist in Residence is selected by a jury of art professionals. During their six month tenure as Artist in Residence, a Newark artist works in a studio located in the former Hahne Department Store and participates in the dynamic cultural community of Express Newark.
