Largely self-taught, Norman Lewis (1909-1979) grew away from his early, clearly political paintings and developed an abstract style which prompted The New York Timesto call him “among the best American ‘mainstream artists.’ Though he is known as a colorist, throughout his career he experimented with a predominantly black palette. This exhibit is the first mounting of paintings drawn only from his “Black Series”and spans more than 30 years of his work. It is presented in celebration of Black History Month.Includes the work of Norman Lewis.This exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with contributions by Alison Weld and Stuart White.
