Taylor Miller & Fury in Conversation

Thursday, 06/06/2019

The exhibition, Stitches of Strength, is a collaboration between the Paul Robeson Galleries and the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance.

The squares that constitute the quilt on view are part of the Clothesline Project on the Rutgers University – Newark campus. The colorful t-shirt material and denim squares represent sexual violence and intimate partner violence in various forms. This quilt is upheld, both literally and figuratively, by stitches of strength.

Taylor Miller will discuss the curatorial process and provide prevention information. Fury, likewise, will discuss practical ways to engage these ideas and the people it affects.

The conversation will be followed by a pop-up shop curated by Fury, in Room 312/ Workshop 2.

Taylor Miller joins the Office of Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance office with a Bachelors in Social Work from Rutgers University-New Brunswick. She acts as a Confidential Sexual Violence Advocate for the County of Middlesex. Taylor has worked with the National NO MORE Campaign as well at the Center on Violence Against Women and Children as a research assistant. She is a two-time TEDx Speaker and RAINN Speaker Bureau member.

Fury is the owner of the specialty dress shoppe, Dressed Up, coming soon to Newark’s Teachers Village. As a domestic abuse survivor, Fury is committed to bringing sustained awareness to this epidemic as a writer. In addition, she was recently appointed to the subcommittee of Essex County’s The Domestic Violence Unit for the support and safety of domestic abuse survivors. Plus, Fury launched reDressed, an advocacy program dedicated to providing dresses (and other clothing) to abuse survivors.
