THE EVENT
Layqa Nuna Yawar will be speaking about his creative practice, his inspirations and his methodology. As part of the ART BIZ programs, the emphasis for this talk will be to provide concrete suggestions about how to manage one’s art and specifically the nuances of Layqa’s extensive career as a muralist.
THE ARTIST
Laqya Nuna Yawar is a public artist and multidisciplinary storyteller based in the ancestral lands of the Lenni-Lenape: current day Newark, New Jersey. His work is best known for large-scale community-based murals, intricate portrait paintings, and multimedia projects that center the complex narratives of immigrant, black, indigenous, and subaltern populations. He trained at Rutgers University, and currently teaches on the Newark campus. In 2019 the Paul Robeson Galleries commissioned the artist to create three murals celebrating the life of our namesake (and Rutgers alumni) Paul Robeson. Layqa has recently completed mural commissions for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Munich Airport, New Jersey. This mural was in collaboration with the Public Art Fund and is on permanent display at Newark Liberty International Airport.
ART BIZ
An ongoing series of PRG programs where creative practitioners speak frankly about how to navigate a career in the art world.
